Huhu Beetle (Prionoplus reticularis)

The Huhu is endemic to New Zealand and is the largest beetle in the country. It spends two to three years as a wood-feeding larva, and then about two weeks as a non-feeding adult beetle.

They are common around the country. The adult beetles only appear during summer (about November to March) with the peak in December and January. They are nocturnal but are strong fliers and are attracted to light so end up in houses a lot and around street lights.
