The indoor exhibit for lowland gorillas in the Great Ape house in Hannover Zoo. Way too small and boring. Could easily be expanded though, by filling the moat. The chimpanzees have an indoor exhibit like this one.
October 2008
Sounds good Toddy, but I would also like the orangutans in the current chimpanzee exhibit, so they can have more space. Also, maybe they can have some new species in the house if the gorillas move out: Vervet monkeys, ring-tailed lemurs, siamangs etc.
Having the orangs live in one of the chimpanzee exhibits would be a really bad idea. Those exhibits are not suitable for orangs, and the chimpanzees would just be left with one way too little exhibit.
It would be much easier and better to expand the orangs' current outdoor exhibit.
I think, the best idea for the present ape house at the zoo hannoverw ould be to build it into an african tropical house, so without otangs and chimpanzees, but with a big indoor exhibit for gorillas and one guenon species, which are share the outdoor exhibit also, together, after some changes, with a forest duiker species ( Red flanked for example, they recently had come to an european collection )
The Orang exhibit could be used for another guenon species,( but I would prefer african golden cats, but thats unrealistic ) Civit cats would be nice too, but they are mostly nocturnal, and Serval and Caracal are not live in the tropical rainforest.
Maybe they were room for a exhibit for african dwarf crocodiles, the Zoo hannover doesn't has any crocodile species....There are so many south amercian and asian rainforest houses in europe, but I don't know any african rainforest house, so why ?
Hannover has a good collection of african animals, so this house would be a great addition to the Zembesi-Theme.( Zambesi is another name for the same river ! , so its correct,if you write it with a "Z", Toddy ! )
