Aha! So the Hannover Zoo does have some excellent habitats! The pool appears to be large, and I particularly like the sandy beachfront property that the hippos have for snoozing.
You like this new exhibit ? The landpart is too small, don't forget, hippos are walking in the night long distances to reach their food places, and the pool is not that big, a sit seems on the picture. 6 hippos live in it, and in winter times, they only have the inside pool in the Hippo Canyon. Becuase the zoo wants that the visitors can see the hippos all day, it is not allowed to the hippos, to use the inside boxes, they have to be in the water the whole day. On the other side, they can not use the pool during the night. Not really a good keeping of hippos. We don't have good hippo exhibit in germany.

I agree that the land area does look rather small however, hippos in the wild spend the day in the water and the night on land so, from what you have said, their husbandary methods do not seem too bad.
I don't agree with you, redpanda, because in zoos, hippos are on land also during the day and enjoying sunbathes, sleeping on land or take a mud bath ( no german zoo offers the hippos a mudhole, really sad )
Strange, some french zoos do, and some of them offers the hippos really big landparts....

Its always interesting to hear about a captive animals 24 hour experiance. Then judging if it lives well. As l fear allot of zoos in climates that experiance cold/snow/short days. Really are a long way from being a good experiance for the animal. Who may well be seen by the public on a warm sunny day in a ultra-natural exhibit.

The Zoom-Erlebniswelt has a mudbath outside!
Also there is a gigantic pool for them, which can be seperated in two parts.
Okay, the indoor enclosures aren't so great for them, but not so bad at all..
The outdoor pool at Gelsenkirchen Thempark Zoom isn't gigantic and I don't know not only one good hippo exhibit in germany, they all to small with too small landparts, too small pools, to little groups, some zoos are keeping only two hippos, so it would be a better option for Stuttgart,Frankfurt and Kronberg to stop keeping hippos until the have build new hoems for them, and no mudholes. I wintertimes, the hippos are kept several month inside in too small indoor holdings with no mudhooles , and of course to small landparts. Big indoor halls are now very popular for elephants and giraffes in german zoos, so why they do not the same for hippos and rhinos ? The zoos are still keeping rhinos in tiny concrete boxes, each for each other, altough white rhinos are very social animals. Think about that....I know the reason, its hard to earn money with rhinos calfs, its much easier with cute elephantor giraffe calfs. I have no hopes to see someday in the future a really good hippo exhibit in a german zoo.
