Red admiral butterfly, wild, UK

This is the first year I have seen quite a few, there were a couple together when I took this one, as it's a place where they encourage boundary crops and nettles.

I live by a disused railway line. Nettles grow on the embankment and I used to see dozens of small tortoiseshells every year. I don't see any now.

@Lafone
We have just done the great butterfly count and numbers/spp seem to be good in our area of the midlands at least, now the sun has come out - whites, red admirals, peacocks, brimstones, ringlets, gate-keepers, meadow browns etc - the 'usual' spp for our area.

@ZooNews2024 great mix! I’ve had nice shots of red admiral, peacock and gatekeeper so far so the hunt continues. We have nice whites in the Budleia now.

The problem is that butterflies that were emerging come spring and ones that were still in their larval stage (such a Meadow brown, Gatekeeper etc) have been washed out by the very wet spring we had nationally. I've only seen a fraction of some species that in good years are abundant but whites as a whole seem to have done well this year.
