African elephant exhibit - Santiago Zoo (Zoologico nacional)

The zoo keeps a pair of african elephants; "Jumbo" and "Protea", who arrived on the 90's.

This enclosure was the subject of an episode of the Animal Planet series Untamed and Uncut, which showed harrowing human-animal encounters. The female fell head-first into the moat, was lifted out, and proceeded to immediately get electrocuted by a wire keeping the agitated bull away from rescuers. She survived thankfully and that large metal fence was added following the incident. Seeing the footage as a kid really stuck with me, although it's unfortunate the elephants still live in such a puny yard all these years later.

Exactly... As I left the zoo and looked for more informations on the individual animals, I found this footage which I had watched years ago on AP, but did'nt actually made the links to the place. My biggest surprise was that the elephant that passed through all this still lives at the institution. A fall on a moat and following hotwire damage and still being there 25 years later... That's one resilient lady.
