This feels like such a Mandela effect now as for majority of time now there has only been 3 elephants in the zoo. I know they got a new male, but what happened to Bets?
Bets passed away in 2019. There was a press release that is still listed if you click on media at the very bottom of their website and select the year 2019. This LINK should bring up the PDF. In this press release they didn't comment on the exact cause death, but if I'm not mistaken they have since identified the exact illness. I don't remember off the top of my head what exactly that illness was so I'll try to find a source before I comment at the risk of being wrong.
Okay after doing some digging my memory was correct; the official cause of her death was later determined to be EEHV. I remember hearing from sources at the zoo that there was huge efforts were made immediately following her death to ensure that the rest of their elephants were healthy and treated for the same illness.
