Javan Leopard + False Gharial Exhibit

August 14, 2024
@Osedax This is just about the very first animal habitat visitors see at the zoo and a major disappointment was seeing a sign next to this exhibit that mentioned how the Javan Leopard(s) were off-show for the time being. Due to the many signs and the layout of the area, @twilighter and I walked away convinced that the Javan Leopards and False Gharials were in fact a mixed-species combination and I think that's the case unless anyone knows otherwise. The other crazy thing is that the enclosure is open-topped and yet somehow it normally contains Leopards. Very odd!

From what I could observe, these two species aren't exactly mixed. I assumed the leopards were positioned in those climbing platforms and rocks located behind the real false gharial exhibit, separated from the leopard exhibit with some rocks and other foliage but still subtle enough to make a illusion of a mixed exhibit.

@snowleopard all three main Taman Safari parks have open-topped leopard exhibits for a long time. They worked because of the rather large exhibit, lot of shelters, and a large climbing platforms in relative to the exhibit that makes the leopard more disinterested to go on the ground. In the case of Prigen, the leopard exhibit have moat surrounding it.
