Nutria Exhibit #5

August 16, 2024
@Fargusno I heard that these nutria can give birth to hundreds of babies, so there really should be some kind of birth control antibiotic to control the reproduction of these nutria.

@Fargusno Remember BSZ once had a hairy-nosed otter (Lutra sumatrana) and an otter civet (Cynogale bennettii), it is best to fill 2 out of 5 nutria cages with these two animals.

@Jonathan Harry
Nutrias have average litter of 5 cubs. They have usually just 1 litter per year hier in Europe (if living wild) or 2 litters when kept captive for meat production. Gestation is 4,5 months so even in tropical countries, they wont have more than 3 litters per year.

@Jonathan Harry they still have the single otter off-display. Getting these native animals are easier said than done, ethically (If it doesn't involved illegal method like smuggling). It's just that Batu has been quite "lucky" that BKSDA or other agency were able to get a hand of an confiscated individual.

Additionaly, the lack of cover would possibly stress out the otter civet. It does need to be noted that these animals, due to how elusive they are both in the wild and captivity, are often than not nearly unknown to eks situ maintenance and research, making longetivity almost incredibly short if a very intensive research aren't present.
