Cape sugarbird on a Protea

Kirstenbosch Botanic Garden, 12th September 2024
Male. Promerops cafer.
This is a photographic cliché for South African birding. Nonetheless, if a smart male sugarbird sits on a Protea flower in good light when you have your camera in your hands - you can't resist.
This is an endemic species which depends on the native flora for nectar, supplemented by the occasional insect. But the nectar is deep within the flower, so the bird's forehead gets covered with pollen to fertilise the next flower it visits.
