What facility is this wildlife rescue centre? Is it open to the public? Where (or roughly if you can't disclose exactly) is this place? And do you have a thread detailing your trip to South East Asia that I've missed?
@LaughingDove I love the questions...bring 'em on! This place is called Wildlife Rescue Centre No. 1 and it is about 1.5 hours northeast from Bangkok and in a jungle area. The last couple of kilometers is just a gravel-dirt road, but I think that anyone can stop by for a visit and I was in a rented car with a driver or else I would never have been able to get there. I uploaded a bunch of photos into the gallery in the 'Thailand - Other' section and this place has a single Marbled Cat and a solitary Assam Macaque, both being 'lifers' for me at that time. There's also some ghastly Tiger and Asiatic Black Bear cages that are just about the worst I've ever seen. Oh yeah, and literally 1,200 Crab-eating Macaques in a long row of enclosures.
I know that you've been off ZooChat for a while, but I have a huge 'Mammals' thread that has been an epic, year-long project and the feedback on it has been fantastic. I began it in January and I'm hoping to wrap it up in the next month or so. Once that is finished, then I will begin reviewing Asian zoos on my Snowleopard's 2024 Road Trip: Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore & Indonesia thread in early 2025. I visited 59 zoos/aquariums and was gone from Canada for 23 days in total.
Some of the staff at Wildlife Rescue Centre No. 1 had zero clue that they were caring for a “Holy Grail” animal in the shape of that Marbled Cat. Rather extraordinary. Later on in the trip, I saw TEN Marbled Cats in one room at a privately run zoo that also receives government support. It was an insane moment, but that's a story for another day...
