@Summer Tanager Taronga has kept a rescued Welcome Swallow for several years in the old Bush Birds aviaries and now in the Semi-Arid Aviary. It is fed by having live stingless bee hives in the aviary.
@Osedax Wow - that is a clever approach! I hope that the owner of this bird is doing something similar. I know this isn't a captive-bred bird, but I didn't think about the possibility that it's a non-releasable injured bird.
@Summer Tanager I have to correct you here : this is a captive bred bird ! There are indeed VERY few aviculturists which work with swallows but evenso they exist ! As @Osedax already said, also some zoos ( and Birdparks ) are keeping and breeding swallows but also here : very few.
@Summer Tanager Zoo Wuppertal, Germany, has kept this species for over 50 years now and first bred them in 1975. As @vogelcommando says, not many zoos keep them, but a few do.
@vogelcommando Wow! I had no idea that any one was breeding swallows in captivity! That's very cool but I still think that it must be difficult and expensive to feed them. I'm happy to know that this one is indeed captive bred! Thank you!
