Sun Bear Exhibit #12

August 20, 2024
I thought that Surabaya Zoo had a lot of Sun Bear exhibits (4 or 5), but Ragunan having TWELVE Sun Bear enclosures and FIFTEEN Tiger enclosures is quite crazy. It would be interesting if those 27 exhibits once held a variety of big cats and bears, or if they've always mainly been focused on Sun Bears and Tigers.

@snowleopard I don't think they had that many species of big cats and bears. They always have the lions and tigers (Sumatran and 'Bengal') for a long time, as well as sun bears that are easier to be brough in locally and briefly Eastern black bears. No idea why they has to have that many exhibits for just one (sub)species. Though I feel this must've been a common practise in older zoos back then to have multiple enclosures for well-known animals that Ragunan still continued to practise.

They somewhat have a more varied collection of bears. There were three species that have been kept by the zoo and all has been kept in the same enclosure that is now the eastern black bear exhibit. I'm aware that it once houses an Syrian brown bear (Signed as 'European' brown bear). Since 2003, it then houses a pair of Sri Lankan sloth bear that had arrived alongside a pair of Sri Lankan leopards that were part of an exchange with the Sri Lankan National Zoological Garden with a pair of Ragunan's orangutans. The black bears has been there since I believe the 2010's and previously displayed in the same area as the sun bears (Pictured) briefly.
