Sitatunga Exhibit #2

August 20, 2024
While they might or might not be missed (Or there are changes during his visit), there are around four exhibits and complexes in the zoo that houses western sitatungas.

Two individual exhibits have been documented by @snowleopard (One massive single-species exhibit and one smaller single-species exhibit in the Children's Zoo). The other exhibit was in the mix with an Grant's zebra at the eastern corner of the zoo that wasn't signed on the map. Additionaly, multiple smaller paddocks near the massive sambar deers and water buffalos exhibits houses several female sitatungas. One of the exhibits near the lowland anoas also hold sitatungas in my last visit in July, but had seems to be moved elsewhere judging from these photos.

Sitatungas can be considered as the most widespread species of African antelope kept in Indonesian facilities and one of the three widespread antelopes here (Along with blackbucks and nilgai). Ragunan have a massive surplus of this species and most sitatungas in other Indonesian facilities might've originated from there (As confirmed with Semarang Zoo).

@Rizz Carlton That's good to know. I think they are wonderful antelope and I wish that more U.S. zoos had an interest in keeping them. They seem well-suited to the climate of Indonesia and they seem like a wise exhibit choice there for representing African antelope!
