Photo taken from behind barrier due to partial closure of exhibit. Reason for partial closure not stated, but historically it’s been done serval times in recent years to allow the troop privacy following a birth.
I spoke to someone who worked at the zoo a few months ago regarding this, and they claimed it was due to some tension between Tomkay and his brother, Djibouti as the latter matured and thus felt ready to take on a troop of his own. The barriers help minimise any potential stress, to lessen the chances of potentially triggering any aggression.
@That Aussie Guy Thanks for letting me know. I was hopeful of a new infant since it’s been a while since Quasi last gave birth and Mahali has yet to produce a surviving infant. The troop only has three adult females, so adding more females would help; though I acknowledge until the troop moves to Monarto, space is an issue.
