Giant Eland

western nesomys (Nesomys lambertoni)

Tsingy De Bemaraha National Park- Oct 2023
@Summer Tanager Yea I had no idea about this species until I was planning the trip! A friend I went to Kenya with had photographed them on a Madagascar trip but had no idea what they were. So I looked into IDing it and became very enamored with the idea of photographing one myself. Actually led to me adding this park onto the itinerary late into planning.

@Giant Eland I'm glad you added that park - it was a wise decision! This is an impressive rodent! I know that there are no native squirrels in Madagascar and this almost looks like an example of convergent evolution of a rat moving into a niche normally held by squirrels (such as the Rock Squirrel or California Ground Squirrels that we have in the U.S.).
