The current status of the known species and subspecies of bichir are still widely divided. There are those that believe that there exists many more species than currently described, and those that believe that each "species" are nothing more than distinct geographical variants.
Here in Singapore, many hobbyists stick to the opinion that multiple undescribed species exist. Polypterus sp. 'Koloton' is said to be one of those distinct species, being closely related to the Nile Bichir (P. bichir).
Whether you believe in this split or not, one thing is for sure, they all look amazing!
