Giant Eland

giant otter (Pteronura brasiliensis)

Pantanal- Jun 2021
Thanks @fofo ! Was a spectacular species to see wild. And my 2nd country doing so- as I saw them in Napo, Ecuador a few weeks earlier.

Are Giant Otter equally as elusive as some of their other counterparts? (namely the African Otter species, which I've had the privilege of seeing Spotted-necked and Cape Clawless, both in the wild in the past 6 months! ;))

@Nix Luckily, no. The Giant Otters were very easy to see in the Pantanal, a little more shy in Napo. It also helps that they’re loud and live in groups.

In comparison I only saw one total Neotropical Otter.

Well done on the Cape Clawless! I missed out on that one twice in Cape Town (never had much time to commit to it though).

I’ve had pretty good luck with wild otters since 2020- 8 species across 4 continents. But I had never seen a single one before 2020!
