Red-bellied Black Snakes (and Marsh Snakes) regularly cross a local bikeway trail near the airport. Unfortunately there are frequent casualties with cyclists running over these snakes as they cross the wetlands so I made sure this one crossed safely.
Why on earth would you run over a venomous snake with a bicycle - that's really not affording much protection from the snake trying to bite you and it's cruel to the snake...
Unfortunate such stereotypes are tough to undo - a lot of rattlesnakes (and by resemblance Gopher Snakes too) around here meet premature ends sad to say. Why you'd try and hit a venomous species on a bike though just seems so pointlessly risky, for what, killing something that wanted nothing to do with you? There was a case here awhile back where someone dropped a big rock on a rattler and left it to die... people can be so thoughtless.
