The Last Clouded Leopard

January 8, 2024.
The female, named "Gan Gan", was born to wild-caught parents in a facility in Changning County, Sichuan on October 29, 2007. She and her twin sister, "Qiu Qiu", moved to Chongqing Zoo in 2009. With her littermate passing away in early 2023, she is now the last clouded leopard in mainland Chinese zoos.

Once widespread in southern China, clouded leopards were extirpated from most of their former range and now reduced to a few populations across the border. Thus the old female in Chongqing is actually the last descendent of the none-border populations in China, which makes the individual even more special. Sadly the lineage she represents seems doomed and will inevitably be lost in near future.

"Gan Gan", the last clouded leopard in mainland Chinese zoos, passed away on January 19 at age 17.
