Pamphlet map - Hirakawa Zoo (Kagoshima)

March 2025
I'm not familiar with this zoo, but the map makes me believe that it's very nice! It certainly checks most of the boxes and I like that there's a large aviary and a cranes of the world section!

I haven't written the review yet but it is one of the best zoos I have visited in Japan. The grounds are extensive and very "garden-y" with forest. It only opened in 1972 so it is mostly devoid of the sort of horrible cages at somewhere like Ueno Zoo. The row of monkey cages is really awful and the bear enclosures are way too small, but you could imagine that in the early 1970s these would have been seen as fantastic - especially if compared to other Japanese zoos of the time. Most of the other enclosures and cages are fine, and there are some really good ones too like the primate islands and the walk-through aviaries.

Your photos definitely gave it a garden-like feel! I wasn't aware of this zoo before and I didn't realize that it was relatively new (50 years isn't that old in the grand scheme of things). I see what you mean about it avoiding the problems that many older zoos have, and yes, those bear exhibits would have been nearly state-of-the-art in the early 70s!
