Gelada Exhibit at Rheine, 03/06/12

Rheine is the epicentre of the European population of Geladas - most new holders receive stock from here. There are two huge breeding groups in large, open exhibits with fairly standard glass-fronted indoor viewing.

The new Zoo Grapevine magazine lauds the Gelada complex, and how many primates are there in the two exhibits? Have they ever been mixed with other species?

Atleast one group used to be mixed with Barbary Sheep,as for numbers between the 2 groups when I last visited they must have been around 100 in numbers!

Yes, one group is still mixed with Barbary sheep. The sheep are limited to one corner of the enclosure.

100 sounds a bit high, but it's probably not far short of that number.

The group was founded in 1980, so it's been a long-term commitment to the species.
