@Rajang-GOAT “Leopard Lookout” refers to the walkway behind the enclosure which allowed you to get a treetop view of the leopards. It had been closed a number of years before I posted that comment (maybe even close to a decade, if I remember correctly), but Marwell still held Amur Leopards in the actual enclosure and could be viewed from the ground. I’m not sure if the walkway was actually demolished as planned, or if it’s still there.
The Amur Leopards, who had a good innings, died and were replaced by Clouded Leopards who sadly died after only a few years at Marwell. The enclosure is now being converted to house Red Panda.
@Cat-Man Thank you, I think I fully understand now. I did suspect that the Clouded Leopards replaced the Amur leopards, but I saw this grandiose structure and dismissed this being the enclosure deconstructed for Red panda. Do we know if there was any particular reason why the Amur leopards weren't replaced (by their own species)?
@Rajang-GOAT I can’t say for certain. I suspect it the enclosure might have been considered slightly too small for Amur Leopards by the time it was replaced, but I’m not sure. There may have been none available at the time.
This is the enclosure when it was newly built. It initially actually held Persian Leopard in one side, and Amur in the other until the elderly Persian died.
@Newzooboy this was talked about extensively on another thread, and I thought it was agreed that the Persian leopards were also held on the south road, where the last one died?
