Is it still a walkthrough? On my 2023 visit, two years ago nearly to the day, a sign suggested that it was only temporarily closed to visitors, but it seems to still be the case all this time after.
Well, I thought it is/was, and that it only was closed because of the nesting Secretary birds on top of the entrance. Not sure of that's correct given your experience.
@Philipine eagle it is quite possible which that is the case, and both of us simply got unlucky. If the sign on the door here simply said that it is due to nesting birds then I will take their word for it and not speculate any further. Can't remember what the reason for closure was on my visit, maybe nesting vultures.
@LeMandaiEnthusiast‧it was stunned when I first began discovering them as well, but there are quite a few other examples. Burgers' Zoo has free-flying Turkey Vultures in the Desert (which is entirely a walkthrough), there are both Rüppell's and Hooded Vultures in the walkthrough Buffalo Savannah aviary at Antwerp, and Egyptian Vultures share a walkthrough with several other birds at Prague.
And as philippine eagle suggests, there are even more open-fronted bird of prey aviaries that aren't truly walkthroughs but do put you in the same space as the animals. Prague does it with several species of vultures, kites and eagles in their 'Great Aviary' and Magdeburg actually has a second example with Red Kites and Eurasian Eagle-owls elsewhere in the zoo, which I thought was fantastic.
It is a shame that they are so rare (none in the UK that I know of) because they are amazing. Having a huge Turkey Vulture swoop inches above my head at Burgers' is an all-time zoo memory for myself.
Vultures are a pretty common walkthrough animal. And Secretarybirds to a lesser extent. Both Blijdorp and GaiaZOO had walkthroughs with various vultures, although both were recently closed (because of bird flu, not because of the vultures). Amersfoort still has a large walkthrough aviary with Western Eurasian griffon vultures. As Kalaw mentioned, Burgers' has had Turkey vultures free-roaming in their Desert greenhouse for years and recently also added American black vultures to their indoor rainforest.
Antwerpen also has 3 vulture species in their walkthrough aviaries (Rüppel's griffon, Hooded and Egyptian). Pairi Daiza has (had? I don't know its current status) a large walkthrough aviary with multiple vultures, Secretary birds and even falcons and eagles.
In France, Parc des Oiseaux has two vulture walkthroughs. Their big African aviary has Egyptian vultures, and their Alpine aviary has Egyptian, Eurasian griffon and Cinereous vultures. Beauval has their Hippo aviary with Hooded, Palm-nut and White-headed vultures free-roaming, as well as Secretary birds at some point (based on an outdated species list so that may have changed since)
Kestrels and kites are also pretty common in walkthroughs. Artis has Lesser kestrels free-roaming their Desert house, Black kites are held free-roaming in Dierenrijk and in Blijdorp's (former) vulture walkthrough. Common kestrel in Parc des Oiseaux.
These are just based on the zoos I've visited so there's guaranteed to be a whole bunch more
