1992 San Diego Wild Animal Park

Cotton's Oribi (Ourebia ourebi cottoni)
@UngulateNerd92 — I’m not positive, but back in the day on the monorail tour, there were several enclosures on the opposite side of the tracks, facing the large pasture exhibits. This definitely looks a lot like one of them; facing the East African savanna, at the lower end (across from the lake), there was a hillside bonobo exhibit, followed by what I believe was this oribi enclosure next to the okapi exhibit. These were the last three enclosures seen on the monorail tour before re-entering the Nairobi village and departing the train.. af some point though, I remember seeing gerenuk in place of the oribi every time we went.

But the whole area is no longer the same, now that the monorail is gone. Most of it has been revamped and worked into the African/Lion Camp and Australian sections. Previously, the okapi (and apparently oribi) were only visible from the monorail, until that was taken away and the okapi were incorporated into a better exhibit for more visitors to see. Not sure if they still have gerenuk there, either, though I know the zoo does.

@Seanamhach thank you for sharing this. On my last visit with @ThylacineAlive back in 2018, we did see Southern gerenuks (Litocranius walleri) in the walkthrough exhibit known as Africa Woods (formerly known as Heart of Africa). I never realized that there was a time when Okapi (Okapia johnstoni) were only viewable from the monorail. I've also been wondering about the exhibits that were replaced by Lion Camp. I vaguely remember a paddock for Lowland nyala (Nyala angasii) and another for Calamian deer (Axis calamianensis). I didn't realize an enclosure for Oribi (Ourebia ourebi cottoni) might have been a part of that.

@UngulateNerd92 Yeah, I don’t know how long those exhibits fully lasted… but at least 10-20 years. I was born in 1986 and went to the park frequently all throughout my childhood. Did that make sense, my description of the location? Haha. In my mind it’s perfect. At the tail end of the monorail tour, there was a trio of final side exhibits, across from the pond in East Africa: bonobos, oribi (later gerenuk) and okapi, with possibly a yellow-backed duiker in there, too.

And yes, the okapi were formerly only viewable from the monorail, at least until the Heart of Africa/Africa Woods development took place and they were relocated.
