Known in the trade as the True Spotted Gar (TSG), this species is often confused with the Florida Gar (Lepisosteus platyrhinchus), which is frequently sold under the same name in most stores.

The only way to tell the two apart is to look for bony ossicles on the ventral surface of the isthmus — the TSG has them, while the Florida Gar does not.
