At the time of my visit the Straw-colored fruit bats were temporarily off-show again because, as mentioned on the Laafsekikkers forum, the new exhibit has proven to not be ideal for them yet and they were hanging in an inappropriate spot.
@Mr Gharial There are already free-roaming birds in the pygmy hippo house (pairs of white-headed buffalo weavers and white-crested turacos) and the fruit bats should be added soon and will also be free-roaming inside the house. Certainly a nice mix of species. Personally I really like what they did with the inside of the hippo house, although I'm a bit less charmed by the pygmy hippo outdoor exhibits.

How do they prevent the birds from getting outside when the pygmy hippos go into the outdoor enclosure? Are hanging pieces of plastic sufficient?

@Cyathea There are hanging plastic flaps, most of which are dark with only small translucent sections, and the areas with the outdoor accesses for the hippos are in substantially darker corners of the building.
