White-lipped deer : Whipsnade : 15 Aug 2025

Cervus albirostris. Also known as: Thorold's deer. Individual 2 (of 2 seen). Location: Passage through Asia.
Looks like they may only recently have been released as they still look nervous- note flared tail hairs which is alarm signal.
 
Indeed @Pertinax - both individuals exhibited flared tails, more so whilst in the more exposed parts of the drivethrough (which was likely closed at the time of this photo, taken at closing time from the mound next to the tiger enclosure). There were other animals in the immediate vicinity (small herd of fallow deer, the four banteng, plus a Chinese water deer which definitely intrigued one of the duo), but no human presence nearby.
