Sep. 2025 - Giant Eland Enclosure

Do note that this image was taken on September 8th, 2025 at Zoo Miami in Miami, Florida, USA.
Whats the current status of the US captive Giant Eland population? I see at least 9 individuals here, no idea what the age and breeding potential is of this group.

I’ll try to explain to the best of my ability, but here below is from what I personally know.

While you are correct that Miami maintains nine individuals, eight of them are in this image. Additionally, three of the herd’s females have all successfully bred, with the remaining female “Emmy Lou” being functionally-retired.

“Nomad”, as I’ve stated elsewhere, is the sole breeding bull of the herd; and therefore, his four offspring are all related to him. Consequently, this does limit some genetic diversity within the population when considering their very small numbers.

@DelacoursLangur I’d also recommend checking the following thread, as it pretty much sums up some aspects of the population as a whole: Giant Eland Left in North America
