On the other hand, I chatted to a keeper there; there's a possibility these two elephants could be moved to another zoo with more space, and of course they do not plan on having any more elephants in this enclosure for the forseeable future.
The enclosure is obviously too small, but size is not the most important factor when it comes to species-appropriate husbandry . At Wilhelma, for example, there are only two very old animals. The aim is to ensure that they are not subjected to any major changes, which is why, as far as I know, they will not be moving into the new house - if it will be completed during their lifetime.
