Why didn't they make an aviairy out of this space ? The relative amount of space lost to water moat is only disputed by the loss of vertical space attributable to this exhibit type. While not exceptionnal, a well-structured aviary for one of the 2 major species would definitely make a decent exhibit and would even open the possibility for mixed species.
@Therabu I agree with you that would be better. Might be for heritage reasons, although these grottoes are by no means original and date from the 1970's. A monkey house was located in this area before that, but nothing remains of it in the current building.
Thankfully this building now only houses two larger monkey species, both now with outdoor exhibits, which is a lot better than it was when I came to know this building in the late 1990's, and how it to some extent was until recently.
This building is probably one of the buildings most in need to be majorly changed and overhauled at Zoo Antwerpen, and hopefully something they will tackle if they ever get done with rebuilding the jubilee complex.
