@DaLilFishie The monkeys at Ueno Zoo are kept outside in the mornings, but they are still kept in cages (this is not limited to Ueno, but can be seen in several Japanese zoos).
@captain alligator I'm aware they're let into the larger meshed area earlier in the day, but even then it's still small and bare!! And yes, this isn't unique to Ueno, I saw similarly poor primate enclosures at Kyoto City Zoo - three Mandrills in a glass box only slightly larger than Ueno's monkey cages was particularly alarming!
