Black-Throated Finches (P. cincta) + Red-Billed Firefinch (L. senegala)

Do note that this image was taken on September 23rd, 2025 at the Tulsa Zoo in Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA.
Did you see many firefinches? Back in 2019, I counted 17 Red-billed Firefinches in the desert aviary including at least four fledglings. But last year I only saw six or seven and no evidence of breeding. The Parson's (Black-throated) Finches were doing really well last year and there were several nests.

That's a shame! In 2019, I would have told you that the Tulsa Zoo could have produced enough Red-billed Firefinches for all of the AZA facilities because they were doing so well. But it goes to show how quickly the situation can change for a population in captivity - especially a relatively short-lived one like the firefinches.
