Most Neotropical cervids are a delight to see, given how rare they are in Western zoos and in general. I saw a total of 12 species, 10 of which were new to me.

The Taruca was once kept and even bred at the Berlin Zoo before World War II. Unfortunately, there is no breeding program for them nowadays, and they are notoriously difficult to keep, with only one successful breeding in recent years — at Parque de las Leyendas in 2016.

Congratulations on seeing so many species of deer! It sounds like you had a great trip! I wish there were more species of South American deer in captivity beside the Southern Pudu, but we are all keenly aware of the space limitations that hinder our zoos. I'm glad to hear that there is interest in keeping those species within the Latin American zoo community!
