@Austin the Sengi They’re a stunning tree. They typically flower mid November through to December (hence known as the ‘New Zealand Christmas tree’). It was a surprise therefore to see one in full bloom in October and legend has it, that signals a long hot summer.

Warrnambool Botanic Gardens (Victoria) has Pōhutukawa trees; and the San Francisco Botanic Gardens has one.

Thank you for sharing @Zoofan15! I do find it interesting that the two American specimens are both in California; and I hope that they’ll become more widespread in other botanical gardens one day!

@Austin the Sengi note that the linked website is for - as the title says - "monumental trees", i.e. giant individual trees. It is not a catalogue of all trees. M. excelsa is widely grown in many areas of the world, commonly so in Australia and California, for example. It is even considered invasive in some places.

I just looked up some USA garden sites and you can buy a packet of seeds for about US$10. Actual plants are more expensive of course because they are slow to germinate, but seedlings can be in the tens of dollars while larger plants can be in the hundreds.
