Eastern Grey Kangaroo at Nuremberg, 04/09/15

Macropus giganteus

While watching these we pondered the fall of the Western Grey Kangaroo in Europe - we still considered this Eastern a rarer zoo animal than the Western but were aware it must be a close-run thing. Checking Zootierliste, I find Easterns are now in 23 European zoos and Western in only 16 (!) - so you\'re actually more likely to come across giganteus than fuliginosus these days on a European level. Half of those 16 Western groups are in the UK, so it's still more common here. The Red Kangaroo, exceptionally rare (certainly in the UK) when I started zooing, is now the standard, with a much more healthy 84 listings.
