It is what those exhibits would look like if they were built 25 years ago;)

This is an atrocious penguin cage...dull, boring, depressing, etc.

Pretty sterile exhibit. Horrible use of concrete - i wish more penguin exhibits were outside and had grass like the one at burger's zoo as it's so much better for the animals and more natural.

I hope Melbourne aquariums $28 million dollar creation is a hell of a lot better than this.

@redpanda: Try to keep (sub)antarctic penguins like King's or Gentoos outdoors in this part of the world-you'll end up with a lot of dead penguins...

This enclosure doesn't look pretty, but it has a pool and a cooling system, all the penguins need really.
And there aren't many penguin exhibits that aren't made of concrete.

Sun Wukong - these are not the only types of penguins. Black-Footed, Humboldt and several other species would be fine. If they really wanted to maintain their current collecton, it would be so simple to cover the concrete in turf (the water level would have to be lowered a little to stop it drowning). It would be much better for the penguins and look far nicer too.

Uh, "cover the concrete with turf"....I don't think so. This exhibit is INDOORS, and last I checked turf needs soil and sunlight to survive. Admittedly an ugly exhibit, but as noted for sub-antarctic species water, controlled temperature and air quality are far more critical.
