This exhibit was originally build in 1977, so its more than 30 years old. A few years ago, they renovated it and made the best out of the former concrete, bathroom-like exhibt what was possible. In the next years, the complete Polarium with the Penguin exhibits will be renovated and I'm sure, the new exhibits for the polar bears, penguins and the sealions will be much better than the present enclosures. And by the Way,the King and Gentoo penguins have bred very sucessfully in this old exhibit.

@redpanda: reduakri is absolutely right-it's an indoor exhibit; turf's out of question.
On cold winter days in Munich, the King Penguins are allowed to walk through the zoo-similar to "Penguin Walks" in other zoos, like Edinburgh.
And besides, the zoo also keeps Humbolt penguins closeby, which, btw. just as Black-Footed and "several other" penguin species are also susceptive and vulnerable to f.e. avian malaria, aspergillosis, avian influenca and, as in an recent German example, feral foxes...
@Zebraduiker: well, "very sucessfully" is a bit of an exaggeration; especially in terms of King Penguin females, their current ressources are more than limited...

I've seen Melbourne Aquariums exhibit and it is so much better. The manufactured snow gives it a nicer feel then concrete like this.

At least Munich's exhibit didn't cost $28 million AUS dollars. ;) And let's see how Melbourne will look like in 30 years...

how many peguins are in this exhibit? and how deep is the pool?
