Thanks for that - and i thought my first Cuban hutia was seen a few years later at Schonbrunn! If only i knew what i was seeing back then.
 
I was thinking the same thing, you beat me to it. By the way have any of you seen Jamaican hutias in zoos ?

No I haven't. I know Durrell was working on preservation of the wild population (when they were still known as JWPT) but I can't find any evidence that they were involved in captive breeding at Jersey.
 
oh yes they did ! Quite a number has been bred at Jersey back in the 70-ties and some were send to at least one other zoo ( Frankfurt ). In one of his books ( forgot the title at the moment ) he discribes how he contacted a native Jamaican to catch some for him and send them to Jersey.

Those were Jamaican Hutias, not Cubans.

Now i remember - I read his books so long ago. I'm hoping to go to Frankfurt next year so I will check to see if they still have them.
 
There were definitely some Jamaican Hutias (Geocapromys browni) in London in the Moonlight World late 70s/early 80s.
