Big cats enclosure at Lübeck (now closed)in 2008. To show that it was certainly not the worst zoo as said under other pictures.

First used for a pair of lions, later for two tigers (0,2. One hybrid and one pure bengal - now both in a sanctuary in south africa) rescued from a fresh circus and brought to Lübeck because they were ok with taking these cats.

When and why did the zoo close?

It was a long process, but it closed 2010/2011 for good.

First there was one bad article about it in a big german magazine and after that, without even talk to the zoo about it sponsors did not give money any more, the city (that before stood behind the zoo) was ashamed of it. That was in 2000, after that, without money and with the owner getting sick, the zoo could not survive. PETA and Co did the rest, so even the old circus animals, who should live there as their retirement home had to move in the end.

All a pretty sad story.

Did they just demolish the zoo site?

It is more abandoned, but I was now not there for a year, some exhibits might be still there, some not.
