Horned Parakeet

Taken 9th July 2015
What a beautiful species, very high on my to see list.

Zootierliste notes 7 holders of this species in Europe, are they doing well? I imagine they would be held privately also?

hey, do you know where is really close to Australia? New Caledonia! :p

My crude measuring techniques suggest that the distance between New Caledonia and Christchurch is a couple of hundred kilometres less than that between New Caledonia and Melbourne. Just sayin'. :p

yeah but I've already been there, so your point is moot.

There are many of them in private hands in Europe. All are not breeding well though but some pairs are quite prolific. Probably inbred captive population. Friends of mine that breed in Sweden them say they are like big Cyanoramphus-parakeets.

There were 144 captive Horned Parakeets legally kept in the Czech republic at 30th June this year (based on count of valid CITES licences held by private breeders).

I see them offered for around 1000 euro / pair.

They are most closely related to the Cyanoramphus parakeets, and do look fairly similar (but with obvious differences).

Sounds like there are plenty in Europe though, although presumably there is no known pedigree or breeding programme.
