Just a shame this whole chunk of Wilhelma is now closed.....

This is a completely different building to the small mammal/bird house area so not sure if this is affected - this is no. 50 on the map.

What is kept here? I remember visiting Wilhelma in the summer of 1997, and the nocturnal mammal display was best described as "cosy"..

3 species of bats (Carollia perspicillata, Rousettus aegyptiacus and Pteropus vampyrus), Sugar Glider and Gray Mouse Lemur.

Interestingly enough, in North America there is a long list of zoos that have all fairly recently closed down their nocturnal houses or nocturnal "wings" of small mammal houses. There have not been any built and it seems as if cost-cutting measures have been the main reason for the multiple closures. Calgary, Bronx, Woodland Park, Philadelphia and Fort Wayne are 5 off the top of my head and it is a shame as I personally saw all 5 of them before they closed and I'm rather partial to such facilities. Is there still a proliferation of nocturnal houses across Europe or have they become endangered species there as well?

I have the feeling night houses are becoming endangered species, but it has been going on for a while now (say at least 15 years). Although Wilhelma will create a new night house in the new elephant house that should be completed within a few years...
