I appreciate that the glass is effective against feeding by visitors and keeps cold air currents away from the animals, but I feel that it takes away from the immediacy of the animals and of course their smells are surely an integral part of any zoo visit.Glass panels are fantastic and have a huge role in zoos today, but I feel their place is not the giraffe house. With regard to unwanted feeding by visitors, I believe it is not much of a problem in German zoos in any case.

Smell is the keyword here; I love the smell, sights and sounds in zoos. And that is why I don't like glass whatsoever, it cuts all this off and I often feel like I should rather have stayed at home watching Animal Planet.

I can appreciate that but isnt the smell of a zoo a fairly artificial thing anyway ?

I'm sorry but you have to explain: how can animal smell be artificial? Artificial is something created by us humans, while giraffe dung is perfectly natural ... :p

Well yeah but Isnt the smell in a zoo is going to be different. Different diet ,higher concentrations of waste. I dunno Im probably being a pedan.
I completely agree, I love the smell of zoos but I never thought it was a realistic portrayal of the wild .
