So the coati's are 'theoretically' visible from the roadside?
From what I can gather German zoos seem to have a lot of exhibits that are visible for free, is this as common elsewhere in Europe? (I chose to ask you as you appear to be extremely well travelled! )
I almost missed this set of photo's because of an avalanche of Cincinnati pictures that have popped up recently...

Yes, you should be able to see the coatis as you pass (though we didn't see them on the way in or out). I'd say it was still unusual even in Germnay to have these 'roadside' exhibits - but very few examples outside Germany spring to mind. Warsaw Zoo has a roadside bear enclosure but at some distance from the zoo, so not quite the same thing.

Lisbon Zoo also has a part of the zoo that is free. It includes restaurants, a theme park, the nile crocodile exhibit, a man-made river and some primate islands.

I think in my mind a 'roadside' exhibit (like Dresden, Heidelberg, (Tierpark) Berlin or Warsaw) is different to a 'free' area in the entrance (such as at Lisbon, Rome - and indeed Chester's elephants or Twycross' Snow Leopards). May be I'm making distinctions where there are none however!

That's my point exactly! (Especially regarding Twycross*/Chester.) You can see the exhibits before entering the zoo but by that point you're pretty much commited to going in any way. I can't comment on Lisbon or Rome but I assume it's a similar set-up.
Roadside exhibits are something that you can see without actually intending to go to the zoo!
*If you're in 'Himalaya' then let's be honest, you're going to visit Twycross...
