Duisburg Zoo - Lemur Island

Part of the walkthrough lemur island in Duisburg Zoo, Germany. This island is home to a group of ring-tailed lemurs and has incredibly dense foliage consisting mainly of bamboo. It is difficult to judge the size of the island due to all the foliage but it certainly is a very good habitat for ring-tailed lemurs.

I loved this new exhibit on my recent visit.
Toddy I asked the question on here before how do the lemurs not escape, did you figure it out?
I couldn't see any electric fence at all. Zoogiraffe (I think it was) said that there used to be an electric fence on the bridges leading into the area, but I couldn't see anything when I went.

No, I am affraid that I didn't. I wondered about the exact same thing as the moat seemed extremely narrow and could easily be jumped by a lemur. Especially with the dense bamboo vegetation to take off from.

From what I saw they don't need to jump the moat, they could just cross the bridge with us!

From the photo of the bridge which toddy has uploaded, I believe zoogiraffe was right. On the picture, you can see the metal grid that visitors walk over which would be able to carry a current, as well as the metal strips in the hand-rails to stop the lemurs escaping this way. The technique is so successful that it does not need to be turned on whilst visitors are in the zoo.

PS. Toddy, do you have any more pictures from Duisburg?

So the lemurs arn't smart enough to know that if people are walking over the bridge then they can do it as well?

Looking at the picture I can see what you mean, I was looking for wires when I was there, but this is a better system from a viewing point of view.

During these next 1-2 weeks I will upload somewhere around 150-200 pictures from Duisburg Zoo that together will form an almost complete photographic journey of the zoo along with my usual extensive comments. Just like I have just done with GaiaPark, ZOOM and Cologne Zoo and will do again with Dortmund Zoo, Wuppertal Zoo and Frankfurt Zoo when I am done with Duisburg Zoo :)
