@Arizona Docent: Yes, it is the last of its kind in an European Zoo. There are more posts and pictures of the Amazon River Dolphin in this chat in the "Zoo Duisburg"-threads and -galleries.

@Baldur: Was it the Aquarium (and Zoo) Valencia, Venezuela, you were thinking of?:)
I've been there in 1997 and could have seen 5 of them in an indoor pool.

Unfortunately, there are only two dolphins in Valencia (Venezuela) now. They have lost four botos in a few months; it's a real shame! As far as I know there are only four botos in captivity around the world: two in Venezuela, the one in Duinsburg, and a male in Peru.

Do Hugo Chavez and Angela Merkel get along well ? If not then, it is not likely that the dolphins will be going to that European collection soon. A breeding group near the native habitat would be better in the near future and more likely to happen. There used to be amazon dolphins in Manuas zoo in brazil. I remember seeing a amazon dolphin called Chico at the shedd aquarium back in the eighties. His tank was very small, but he lived for 20 years there.

There's a rescued boto living ast a zoo in northeast peru aswell, but it's a male.

Anyways,Duisburg seems to have the best facility for this species.
