I do not speak of a"gigantic"tank, I speak of a larger tank which provides more space for movement. Many zoos have ended kepeing some other animals, becausee they were unable to keep them as it has to be for that species-I think, I don't have to name any examples for that-maybe one-Frankfurt and elephants ?And pygmy hippos need bigger pools that this one.By the way-the keepers at Leipzig or Berlin also have to clean that pools-but I belive, both places have a perfect personal situation within the keeper staff...

So a too small pool dosen't fullfills the needs of hippos or pygmy hippos-by thy , think about how indian rhinos are kept in our zoos...in tiny concrete stalls in winter times, and they only have access to a pool, to special times...I would say, this is not, what indian rhinos really need-access to a pool, whenever THEY want..in large indoor exhibits on soft ground ( essential for indian rhinos !)like elephants or giraffes....

I don't care about the fiancial situation of a zoo.

Really? But money is what keeps the whole thing running and the keepers and other staff employed. Might be you don't care about the financial situations, but the people working there should. Else there were a huge pool but no keepers to maintain it, because they all got fired due staff cutbacks.

You're right.I didn't meant it as you understood it, so I erased it;)

I meant it from that point, if a zoo hasn't the money to keep a species as it should be kept in an optimal way, tehy shouldn't keep them. And from my point of view, thats the case with the pygmy hippos at Duisburg-they spend a lot of money each year to keep expensive dolphins and koalas, but not for, just one example, the pygmy hippos. Of course they have improved their situation in compare to the former exhibit, so from that point, its okay, but as I said, they need a much better and bigger inside exhibit for each animal, ( this species is more solitary than common hippos, so they can't be kept all the time together )because they spend the most time inside. Leipzig has , no question, a really good indoor pygmy hippo exhibit( for one animal, I don't know, hwo the other one is being kept behind the scenes )but they don't have an outdoor exhibit. And from my personal opinion, this is an inacceptable situation-thats not the way, such animals should be kept. With an outdoor exhibit, Leipig could has the best german pygmy hippo enclosure.;)

Ps: I'm Sorry for the current Situatation of Duisburg Zoo.
