Hmmmm... this is indeed not much better than the old carnivore houses from the 19th century. Glass instead of bars. What a sad contrast to Chester´s magnificent jaguar exhibit!
And they have a lot of technical problems in that house. A few years ago, an animal keeper in this house was nearly killed by an jaguar, because the computer in the house said, that all slider doors to the outdoor cages were closed, but one was open, the sliders door of the jaguar exhibit. The woman enterd the indoor cage and the jaguar came in...Fortunately, she could be rescued by other animal keepers.
Hm, everything has to be a square apparently. I don't get why there is so much room for visitors when a part of the corridor could be used for the exhibit instead.
It's a listed building, so they had to keep some things the way there were. It's not as bad as ZD it makes (i dont linke the house either with so many big cats, but with fewer cats it would be ok, but ZD seems to hate the whole zoo... It's a nice place and i can say to everyone: Visit it and see its not from hell ).
The two jaguars are rescued animals and where send to halle from the dutch "panthera" guys.
Halle Zoo is nowhere near the "zoo from hell". No, the exhibits for big cats are certainly not ideal but they are not that bad either. And the zoo has many high quality exhibits for animals like squirrel monkeys, white-faced sakis, crocodiles and alligators, giant anteaters and many hoofed animals. Less spectacular but good exhibits are the ones for chimpanzees, tamarins, pygmy hippoes and sea lions. I am not pleased with the indoor exhibit for elephants but I do not believe that they are suffering either. Also, their outdoor yard is very good
