Having been asked by the local authorities to continue keeping elephants, but lacking any amount of flat space on a hilly site, the zoo was forced to build an elephant house right at the minimum end of EAZA recommendations for space. Obviously this will cause problems if the minimum space recommendation is raised in future, so to provide future options the house and doorways have been a built a little taller than necessary - at giraffe height!

So you think they will switch from elephants to giraffes then?

I think that as long as the EAZA recommendations stay the same they will stick with elephants. I understand the pressure locally to persevere with elephants was very strong. If the minimum space recommendations are increased, however, they realise they may not be able to legitimately keep elephants any longer so the giraffe option is there if they need it.
