Leipzig Zoo - Komodo dragon

The only Komodo dragon in Germany, living in Gondwanaland, Leipzig Zoo.
The only one? Now that is a surprise as they're becoming more common in the UK and USA. I thought that the Berlin Zoo would've had one in the aquarium.

You have no idea how much this thread made me laugh. :D

We had this conversation every time the Komodo was mentioned on our Leipzig weekend, as there always seemed to be someone new there who wasn't aware and was surprised by this (as it is very surprising!).

Became a standing joke very quickly! :)

There have been serveral komodo`s in the Berlin Aquarium, but they all died rather soon. I don`t know what went wrong, but there have been rumors that conditions weren`t good for them, nor the husbandry. That was at least 10 years ago, before komodo dragons have started to become more common thanks to the breeding sucess in Chester, London, Rotterdam and Prague. I think it`s possible that they will try again in Berlin but I hope that they take a good look into what went wrong before (not very likely, though).

Glad to know I've amused you on a miserable Sunday morning! :D
Seriously though,Germany has a lot of good to world-class zoos and an amazing array of animals so why only one Komodo? Surely they're not that hard to obtain?

Now thats a question that I would love an answer to as well, because as Maguari said it amused us the whole trip that its the only one in Germany!

Oh well, given zoo trends (meerkat, RRH, etc etc) then maybe Germany will soon be over-run with the things... But as Yassa said, maybe they're worried they'll cock it up again and no-one likes egg on their face. And no zoological society wants to give the dreaded animal rights groups something to crow about!

The LA Zoo just announced in their Facebook page that they will be sending some Komodo Dragon hatchlings to Germany, so this won't be the only one for long!

How old are these hatchlings from LA Zoo?

The zoo announced that a female komodo dragon will come next year from the US.
