Always love these.
Always love these.

I think Duisburg has one as well if I remember correctly.

They do indeed - Leipzig's is bigger though! (crate envy, clearly! :D )

I was about to say the very same thing, Duisburg's is tiny compared to this one.
Thanks for the rash of Leipzig pics, makes me more determined to get there ASAP.

Oh and a question, how does Leipzig's elephant enclosure compare to Koln's?

Interesting question. They're both very good, but very different. Leipzig's is smaller, of course, but it has soft substrate indoors and that wonderful underwater viewing window. I think the sheer scale of Cologne's exhibit probably wins out as an elephant exhibit - but there are definitely things that are better at Leipzig.

On a personal level, Leipzig's has pangolins, Cologne's hasn't. No contest. :D

This historical elephant crate was used to transport an asiatic elephant cow to Dushanbe, Soviet Union, in 1987.

The elephant enclosure at Leipzig is about 7000m² large.

Indeed no contest and after reading about yet another species being pushed to the edge by certain people lets hope they can keep them and it's another reason to go because I've never seen them.

The Cologne setup is wonderful , but the lack of soft indoor substrate is a huge fault. What use is a great expanse of space if more enrichment and a more forgiving surface (fundamental for avoiding foot and joint problems) is better provided in many smaller areas? Cologne is one of my favourite zoos but a serious analysis would show the elephant installation as not being among the top thirty of its exhibits. Many of the smaller enclosures are superb, but the Cologne elephant exhibit scores mostly as a crowd-pleaser rather than as an example for top-level elephant husbandry.
